Moroso Performance Selects VISUAL Enterprise for Integrated TOC Management Tools

19 September 2002, Hampton, NH (USA) — Moroso Performance Products, worldwide supplier of automotive equipment for racing and street performance applications, recently purchased VISUAL Enterprise™ from Lilly Software Associates.

Moroso, with headquarters in Guilford, Connecticut, manufactures over 3000 products, from oil pans and oiling system accessories to ignition wire, ignition components, valve covers, fuel system equipment, air cleaners, hard core racing tools, and numerous other performance parts. The company has an impressive list of customers, ranging from grass-roots racers to top level NASCAR Winston Cup and NHRA/IHRA race teams.

Several years ago, Moroso noticed it was not seeing the results it expected for all the hard work its employees performed. That’s when the company decided to shift its business management strategy to incorporate the Theory of Constraints (TOC) philosophy and Drum-Buffer-Rope (DBR) techniques. TOC and DBR enable companies to create production plans that maximize the use of their resources, increase production flow, and deliver customer orders on time.

Moroso worked with the Constraints Management Group (CMG), consultants that specialize in training for all aspects of TOC, particularly in DBR techniques. After adopting the new management strategy, Moroso noticed significant business improvements, but it also became aware that its current software system could not support its new efforts.

“We saw increases in throughput and improvements in inventory control after we adopted TOC into our operations. But we realized the success we were achieving came with the price of increased levels of stress for some key employees,” says Joe Marcinski, General Manager at Moroso. “It became obvious that our current software system put a huge burden on our employees. The software was not user-friendly and only a few people could work on it. Data wasn’t easily accessible, tasks were time-consuming, and reports were cumbersome to create and print. We needed a flexible, scalable solution.”

The company wanted a system that would incorporate tools to help it build products to customer demand and develop “what if” production analyses quickly. It wanted to access information so it could accurately gauge market draw, examine sales trends, and monitor inventory.

“We wanted an enterprise solution that would help us continue to increase our effectiveness, unite our departments, reduce our inventory, control long lead times, and grow the company so our customers select us as their supplier of choice,” explains Marcinski. “We are dedicated to delivering not only superior products, but superior service as well, and we wanted a system that we could trust to manage our business processes.”

In the hard-core race parts industry, business is regulated by sanctioning bodies that create rules about product specifications. These sanctioning bodies often modify the rules to meet new standards, and suppliers like Moroso need to be able to adjust to these changes quickly in order to stay competitive.

When Moroso decided to search for a new system, it examined many different software packages, but there was only one solution that “excited the production control manager,” and that was VISUAL Enterprise.

Marcinski explains why the company chose Lilly Software’s system: “VISUAL Enterprise will allow us to see more detail, more easily, about all aspects of our business. We like that VISUAL supports TOC strategies with its production and scheduling features, and we like that it offers a DBR application we can use to manage our day-to-day production operations. The system is very strong in ‘what if’s’ for manufacturing and inventory control, which will help us adapt to market changes. We want to be a thorough TOC operation.”

VISUAL Enterprise incorporates Lilly Software’s quoting and estimating, order entry, patented concurrent scheduling, production and inventory control, job costing, and shipping capabilities. The optional, integrated VISUAL DBR solution helps companies analyze their heavily-loaded resources and use time buffers to create schedules that ensure the availability of raw material, stocked subassemblies, and finished goods. With VISUAL DBR, companies can analyze workflow problems and adjust the buffers to improve scheduling, guarantee they meet customer delivery dates, and keep their operations lean.
