Lilly Software Enhances Its Technology Strategy with the Microsoft .NET Framework

Hampton, NH — February 13, 2002 — Focused on delivering the best solutions to its customers, Lilly Software Associates announces that it has incorporated the Microsoft .NET Framework into its technology strategy. Lilly Software has been developing with the beta version of Microsoft Visual Studio .NET for over a year and finds that the ease-of-use enhances rapid application development. With faster access to new functionality and a shorter implementation time than ever before, Lilly customers gain a strategic market advantage.

Since its inception ten years ago, Lilly Software has been developing leading supply chain solutions using tools founded on a Microsoft infrastructure. In 1992, the company released its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, VISUAL ManufacturingŇ, which was the first client/server WindowsŇ - based software solution for manufacturers. In 1997, in conjunction with the emergence of Microsoft's COM (Component Object Model) technology and the DNA-M (Distributed interNet Applications for Manufacturing) development strategy, Lilly Software began retooling its technology strategy. Using COM technology, Lilly created several new applications, including VISUAL eBusinessä, a fast-implementing online system that supports Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) transactions, and VISUAL JobshopŇ , a comprehensive solution for small manufacturers.

Today, Lilly Software's VISUAL Enterpriseä supply chain product suite appeals to a broader customer base than ever before. To support larger companies, including those with distributed environments, Lilly decided to incorporate the Microsoft .NET Framework into its technology strategy. The advantage to using the .NET Framework is in its shear depth and vision. Using this single framework, developers can create practically every kind of application software imaginable.

"Migrating our technology strategy to encompass the Microsoft .NET Framework allows us to unite our company's development goals with our customers' business needs," explains David Layne, Senior Vice President, Development, Lilly Software Associates. "Microsoft Visual Studio .NET is a comprehensive development environment. Using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, we can create a variety of software, including Web, Windows, and device-based applications, using a single programming environment. This facilitates rapid application development, which enables us to build and deliver new functionality faster than ever before. We can provide our customers with scalable products and applications that are easier to install and administer. Customers also gain the ability to more easily extend the VISUAL Enterprise system to meet their needs through user-specific function capability and enhancements. To fully exploit this new framework, we have decided to write several new products from the ground up using the new C# language."

In addition to writing products using the C# programming language, Lilly also uses XML Web services in its enhanced strategy. This allows companies to access data easier and integrate their systems with other applications.

"Staying current with technology is important for ensuring that our customers remain competitive," explains Richard T. Lilly, President, Lilly Software Associates. "The Microsoft .NET Framework will revolutionize the way software developers create applications and enable us to deliver a superior product with increased performance benefits."

"Microsoft is excited to be working with Lilly Software to offer customers comprehensive enterprise solutions," says Ilya Bukshteyn, group program manager for the Developer and Platform Evangelism Division at Microsoft Corp. "By targeting the Microsoft .NET Framework and Visual Studio .NET for its product development, Lilly Software creates business applications that provide manufacturers with a strategic advantage."

In coming months, Lilly Software plans to release several products for Microsoft .NET that it will incorporate into its integrated manufacturing, financial, and e-business product line.
